I offer a comprehensive Orthopaedic Expert Witness service to instructing solicitors and insurance companies, in compliance with the current legislation. I aim to provide reports within 6 weeks of seeing the patients and usually achieve a more rapid turnaround. My medico-legal fees are reasonable and are set out in the more detailed CV page.
My particular areas of expertise are:
Orthopaedics and Trauma
Upper Limb Surgery
After pre-registration training I was a casualty officer in London, a GP for a year in the UK and Canada and then a surgical registrar for four years in the specialities of general surgery, gastro-intestinal, vascular, urological and paediatric surgery. Orthopaedic training followed at Registrar and Senior Registrar levels in the SE Thames programme based at St Thomas’ and Guys hospitals in London but also included extensive training in the rest of the UK and abroad.
Present and Immediate Past
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon in Coventry and Warwickshire with a particular interest in the upper limb. I now run an independent private and medicolegal practice. Until January 2017 I was a full time member of the department. I stepped down on December 31 2016. I was the Clinical Director for Orthopaedics and Trauma for the UH C&W NHS Trust for nearly 6 years (1998-2005). While I had been in post the orthopaedic unit grew very considerably from 10 to 25 clinical consultants as well as adding a large academic dept with 2 professors and associated staff. It became a Level 1 trauma centre in 2011.
The unit has a heavy trauma workload and provides high quality integrated elective care in the majority of sub-specialities in Orthopaedics. The majority of Warwick University medical students are taught Orthopaedic surgery in our unit.
I have accumulated experience in all the main areas of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery; Hip and Knee, Shoulder, Elbow, Hand, Spinal, Foot and Paediatric but I now concentrate on the upper limb.
Hand and Upper limb Surgery
My specialist interest is in hand and upper limb surgery. About 90% of my workload is now upper limb.
Audit and Continuing Medical Education
Attendance at meetings and training sessions to keep CME in date. A yearly appraisal programme. Revalidated in 2014.
Previous regular commitment, Orthopaedic surgeons in training, medical students and others. Lecturing on outside courses, including legal seminars on personal injury.
Publications / Research
Peer reviewed research and clinical publications in general orthopaedic and hand journals. Also presentations to societies, book reviews etc.
My research interests are in hand injuries, particularly tendon damage.
